Locum tenens is Latin for 'place holder.  A locum tenens physician takes the place of a physician when they are absent or when there are additional coverage needs within a practice.  The needs vary from short term weekend coverage needs up to full-time long-term.  

Recent reports show over 90% of hospitals utilize Locum Tenens on a regular basis as an integral part of their staffing.
